How to Decorate Around a Grey Couch & What Colors Look Best

    by Ann Ferguson

Did you buy a grey couch this year? You're not alone — grey couches are the most common-colored couch of 2022!

And it's no wonder, too, since grey is a versatile choice that harmonizes with almost any design style. But if you've never had one before or are having trouble making your living room pop, it can be challenging to know exactly how to decorate around it — especially figuring out which colors to use.

But don't worry; we'll go through the different ways you can make your grey couch pop or fade subtly into the background!

    Neutral Decor

A couch with grey upholstery is an excellent base for a neutral color scheme. It fits well with beige, black, sepia, and wood tones. But one way to keep it interesting is to vary the brightness of your neutral décor to add more depth and dimension.

For instance, if you have a dark charcoal sofa, you can paint your walls a warm grey, add creamy white pillows, and use stained accent furniture. You can even add textures to make your space more interesting. Another neutral color pairing to try is beige and cream, which allows you to experiment with a whole host of different colors.

    Use Contrasts

Another way to decorate with your grey couch is to use contrasting colors. You can use them to highlight various elements in your wall space. Like if you have a dark grey sofa (or slate grey), you can paint your walls white or something else light-colored to make your couch pop. But if you have a lighter grey sofa, you can use dark walls (like a rich navy) to showcase your couch.

You can also use contrasts on the actual sofa itself with contrasting throw blankets and pillows. This method makes your couch look more layered and dynamic and lets you add more patterns and bolder pops of color to your design.

    Mixing & Matching Textures

When designing your living room, it's not just the color you have to think about. You also have to think about the texture!

If you have a couch with velvet upholstery, try adding brushed metallic finishes and a matte fiber rug to make things pop. Or, if you'd rather your living room space had better continuity in the design, you can match the textures instead. For example, if you have a linen couch, you can complement the natural feeling with rich wood furniture, glass, or ceramic light fixtures.

Pro Tip: If you love a minimal design and a well-textured design, incorporate industrial design with your grey couch to make your space more interesting!

    Green is a Go

One color that works spectacularly with grey is green, specifically sage green. The deep green adds elegant yet natural vibes to your space and grounds your design.

Using green accents is especially helpful in making wall art stand out. And since it's a versatile, relaxing color, it works great as a wall paint color.

But if you don't want the trouble of painting your walls, you can also work in sage green décor pieces like vases, throw pillows, and blankets.

    Yellow Fun

You might not think it, but yellow is an incredible look with grey. Since grey comes in several shades, it can be styled in several ways.

If you have a warmer grey couch, it looks best with yellow undertones (the yellow complements the warmth!). But if bright yellow isn't your thing, you can easily get away with soft marigold yellows or other warm colors for a subtle and relaxing look.

Pro Tip: If your couch is a cooler grey, try accenting it with blue undertones instead!

    Go Bold

While neutrals and the occasional hints of color are all good, sometimes you want something that screams bold. But luckily, a grey couch is timeless enough to balance out your bold design, especially if you have a lot of colors.

So, if you want to add dramatic teal walls, patterned accent pillows, kitschy rugs, and bold wall art to your living room design, go for it! You'll have a lively space that screams you. Just keep in mind that darker-tone greys like charcoal work best with purples, teals, blue, and other jewel tones.

    Nature is Your Friend

As mentioned before, green is a surprisingly good color for a grey couch. But what's even better is adding green plants!

Plants are incredibly versatile and literally bring life into any room. They're also a natural way to add color and texture to any space, making it more inviting! However, beware of the number of plants you use.

If you want a more minimal look, add one or two plants to your coffee table, like a couple of succulents, and call it good. If you prefer a more maximal approach, go the extra mile by adding hanging plants, floor plants — as many as you can fit!

    Home Sweet Home

Obviously, there's a lot you can do to decorate around your grey couch. Whether you want to repaint your walls or add bold pops of color, the choice is yours! But if you don't have a grey couch, or your old sofa has seen better days, get your journey started with an upgrade from Urners!
