    FAQ Questions About Dishwashers?

    Why Trust Us?

GE and Frigidaire are two of the oldest appliance brands still on the market. The very fact that they’ve survived this long tells you they build products that do the job.

But why are they so popular? What makes GE and Frigidaire unique? And most importantly which brand should you spend your hard earned money on?

Why Are GE and Frigidaire Dishwashers So Popular?

If by popular we mean some of the most widely purchased brands then GE and Frigidaire are popular brands in the appliance industry. And there are several smart moves that the brands have made to add to their popularity.

    1. Product Range: Both GE and Frigidaire offer a wide range of dishwashers – and other appliances – that are at different price points, so they appeal to a wider audience.
    2. Affordability: While both GE and Frigidaire have several higher-end appliance lines, they also make appliances that the factory workers who are building them can afford. That’s the main reason they’re household brands.
    3. Availability: As they are two of the largest and oldest appliance brands in the US, GE and Frigidaire appliances are widely available in many retail stores. That means they’re accessible to customers.

What Are the Differences between GE and Frigidaire Dishwashers?

Both GE and Frigidaire dishwashers have the technology and capability to clean your dishes. But there’s dishwashing and then there’s dishwashing.

While Frigidaire does a good job of providing optimal cleaning abilities with individualized jets to clean your glasses and the EvenDry system on their professional series, GE wins when it comes to the features.

Frigidaire’s fanciest feature is an indicator light beam at the bottom of the dishwasher that lights up when it's running.

GE offers the UltraFresh system which keeps your dishwasher from smelling bad. Twin Turbo Dry Boost which makes sure your dishes come out dry. And even wifi enabled machines with the SmartHQ options that let you start your dishwasher even when you’re not home.

They both get the job done, but GE offers a lot more for your money at the higher price point.

GE® 24" Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel Built In Dishwasher

GE Fingerprint Resistant Built In Dishwsher

GE 24in Stainless Steel Built in Dishwasher

This is a great example of GE delivering a lot of value for your money. It offers several options for organization like the flexible utensil basket, adjustable racks, and the flexible tines. And it has a stainless steel drum which keeps smells from living in your dishwasher.

Oh and did I mention that it has four dedicated jets for the upper racks? Yep, it does. No more rings left on your coffee cups here.

    What REAL customers say:

“I was surprised and delighted to find a dishwasher with the features of this one at this price. like the chopstick and wine rack, adjustable tines, adjustable height rack, adjustable size of utensil basket and SS interior. I can fit more into it than my old Nautilus GE (which lasted 12 years!). And it is amazingly quiet. I have to bend down and put my ear next to it to hear it running. Don't let the 157 minute advertised run time fool you. That's at the highest clean setting. Cycles can be as short as 49 minutes depending on cleaning needs. I've only had it 2 months so it hasn't been time-tested yet but so far I love it and highly recommend it.”

    FAQ Questions About Dishwashers?

What size dishwasher do I need?

The standard built in dishwasher is 24 inches wide. The height is just shy of the standard counter height at about 34 inches.

But that’s only if you have a traditional space. If you have an atypical space, then you can measure your opening and decide if something like a dishwasher drawer or a portable 18 inch dishwasher better fits your situation.

How much should I spend on a dishwasher?

How much you spend depends entirely on what you want to get out of your dishwasher.

If you want a basic machine that washes dishes? Expect to pay $350-500.

If you want it to dry your dishes and fit more at one time? Expect to pay $500-700.

What are the most important features to look for in a dishwasher?

There is one single most important feature of any dishwasher. No it’s not the heated dry or the sanitize cycle, or the steam clean. Those features are extremely helpful.

But at the end of the day, if your dishwasher doesn’t wash the food particles off of your dishes before performing those other aspects of the cycle, it’s useless. So make sure your new dishwasher includes a systematic wash system and a power clean cycle for tough jobs.

What is the best dishwasher brand?

According to Consumer Reports, and several other sources including customer reviews, Bosch is the standard for dishwashing excellence. In fact, Bosch appliances built their reputation on their dishwashers. They didn’t even make refrigerators or other appliances for a long time.

But everyone knows that they make excellent dishwashers that are the quietest on the market.

What noise level is acceptable for a dishwasher?

Noise levels are measured in decibels (dBA). And for reference, a telephone ringing is about 60 dBA. The sound of moderate rain falling is about 50 dBA. And a whisper is about 30 dBA.

Most dishwashers are going to be between 50-60 dBA. But high-end dishwashers like Bosch hover around 40 dBA. What’s acceptable depends on you.

If you have an open-concept kitchen and living room, then you’ll prefer to have a quieter machine that doesn’t make a lot of noise. But if your kitchen is separate, then it may not matter as much to you.

What is the difference between built-in and portable dishwashers?

Portable dishwashers either sit on the countertop or have wheels on the bottom. To run water to them, you hook up the supply line to your kitchen faucet. And you run the drain line either to the kitchen sink or a different place where the dirty water can go.

A built-in dishwasher connects to your plumbing under the sink for water supply and has a separate drain line as well. And, obviously, it doesn’t move.

How easy is it to install a dishwasher?

Installing a built-in dishwasher isn’t difficult if you have a properly installed shut off valve and an accessible 110v outlet located under your sink.

If you have those, it’s just a simple matter of shutting off the water, installing the supply lines, hooking up the drain line, and plugging it in.

If one of those is missing, then things can get a little dicey. You may want to call your handy man friend or pay for the installation.

How do I properly maintain my dishwasher?

Over time, scale can build up in dishwashers from mineral or hard water. Old food can get caught and rot in the filter. And then your whole dishwasher starts to smell.

First, pre-washing dishes to remove large food particles goes a long way to keeping your dishwasher running smoothly. And I don’t mean washing the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. That’s overkill.

Prewashing just means wiping all of the large food particles off of your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. You don’t even have to water. You can use a paper towel to wipe everything into the trash, and then put them in the dishwasher.

But in the case that food particles do get in your dishwasher, make sure you unscrew the filter and rinse it out in your sink once a month. That should keep food from building up and smelling in your dishwasher.

To keep the scale away, use a rinse aid like lemon juice or vinegar. These common household items are acidic, so they cut through the lime that forms the scale before it builds up. Bonus: vinegar and lemon juice also keep water spots from forming on your glasses.

Why Trust Urner's and Urner's Mattress?

Urner’s started on the back of a bicycle - yup! A bicycle! David E. Urner, a local high school teacher, who spent his summer months selling Wear Ever cookware off the back of a bicycle (think 100+ degrees). David teamed up with another local teacher, Errol P. Janes to create “a new type of store – one that would cater exclusively to providing an easier way of living for the women of Kern County”, and on September 19, 1919, Home Appliance Store was opened to the public. The store boasted a rather impressive selection of “modern” appliances, including a washing machine, a freezer, a gas range, an automatic dishwasher, and an assortment of small appliances. Since then, Urner’s has expanded selections to appliances, furniture, mattresses and cabinetry!

For nearly one century, the Urner family and Urner’s business have both been an integral part of Bakersfield and Kern County, with contributions to the community (Better Business Bureau, Sister City Projects, Bakersfield Symphony), charity (Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude’s Dream Home, House of Hope) and education (CSU Bakersfield, Ray Dezember Leadership Development Center.
