6 Houseplants That Help You Sleep

    by Waverly Wilde

Bring nature indoors to promote a healthy sleep pattern and control stress levels.

    Lavender

Lavender is known to be one of the scents that helps promote restful sleep and reduces anxiety levels. It can be used as the actual plant form, or you can keep a bottle of lavender essential oils around the house to fill your diffuser before bed.

There are a number of lavender scented products on the market today, but the most effective is the lavender plant itself. It can fit easily on top of your nightstand as an accent piece in your room while it fills the air with a calming aroma. It’s a plant that requires little maintenance--try to avoid overwatering as the roots can rot from an excess of moisture.

    Jasmine

Jasmine is a stunning ivory flower that offers a similar effect to lavender. The calming, gentle scent of jasmine helps reduce anxiety levels--giving you a better night’s sleep. You’ll awake each morning feeling more alert, energetic, and productive throughout the day when you’ve had a deep and restful sleep. Place your jasmine plant anywhere in your bedroom and take on the day with vigor and clarity.

    Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a very potent plant that has many positive effects on the body. People typically associate Aloe vera with sunburn, but the gel found within the Aloe leaves can also be a natural treatment for frostbite, dry skin, cold sores, itching, and other skin conditions.

The Aloe plant is also known to improve sleep quality. It produces a high level of oxygen to give you a peaceful and thorough slumber. Caring for the plant is easy as it does not require much water--just be sure to place the Aloe plant by a window so it can absorb lots of sunlight.

Get this, Aloe vera doesn’t taste half bad either! You can purchase bottles of Aloe vera juice that are loaded with antioxidants to help digestion and strengthen your immune system.

    Snake Plants

Snake plants, or better known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, is an air-improving plant that emits oxygen during the night--helping to improve the air quality in your home so you can catch up on some much-needed sleep. This plant even acts as a filter to absorb airborne pathogens so you don’t breathe in harsh toxins while you sleep. Snake plants are low-maintenance and fit nicely in any bedroom setting to help improve your slumber each night.

    Peace Lily

The peace lily not only looks appealing to the naked eye, but it also acts as a natural air purifier to filter out dust in any room. This type of lily can also increase the level of humidity in your bedroom by up to 5 percent, which can help improve breathing while you sleep.

The increase in humidity can help soothe an itchy throat or nose during allergy season so you aren’t left sniffling and struggling to breathe throughout the night.

Peace lilies go great in a nice shady spot and only need a splash of water once a week.

    Rosemary

Rosemary is more commonly known as a flavorful herb that pairs beautifully in a lot of fall time cuisine, but it’s also an air-purifying plant that helps balance mood swings, relieve stress, and improve air quality. It might seem a bit unusual to keep a rosemary plant in your bedroom, but it offers tremendous health benefits and even helps to improve your memory.

Rosemary plants require a considerable amount of direct sunlight--about 6 hours each day, and they need to be pruned regularly to control their rapid growth.

Any extra rosemary can be used in the kitchen--saving you money and improving your sleep at the same time.
