1. Pumpkin Gourd-land
This pumpkin garland will add a playful touch to your dining room, fireplace, or archways!
You’ll Need:
- Orange tissue paper
- Cotton string (preferably white)
- Printable Jack O’ Lantern stencil
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Stapler
Directions:
- Cut a cotton string to the desired length (i.e., to cover the length of a wall or width of an archway).
- Fold one sheet of tissue paper in half.
- Using your pencil, trace the Jack O’ Lantern stencil on the tissue paper, ensuring that the top of the stem does not “cut off” underneath the fold. The fold is where both sides of the Jack O’ Lantern will connect.
- Using your scissors, cut out the shape of the Jack O’ Lantern without splitting the fold at the top of the stem. In addition, cut out the carved facial features, including the eyes, nose, and mouth. In the end, you should have two overlapping Jack O’ Lanterns that fold over at the stem.
- Repeat steps 2–4 until you achieve the desired number of Jack O’ Lanterns or enough to span the length of the string when arranged side-by-side.
- Place your Jack O’ Lanterns along the length of the string. The inside fold should sit tautly on the string so that there is one Jack O’ Lantern on each side.
- Secure the placements of your Jack O’ Lanterns by stapling the stems near the top of the fold.
- Hang your garland at your desired location.
2. Swarm of Bats
These batty wall hangings will provide the allusion of bats swarming your home.
You’ll Need:
- Black construction paper
- Printable bat stencil
- Scissors
- Pencil (or white colored pencil)
- Tape
Directions:
- Using your pencil, trace the bat stencil on the construction paper. Repeat until you achieve the desired number of bats.
- Cut out the bat shapes.
- Add double-sided tape (or regular Scotch tape that you can make double-sided) to the body of your bats on the side you want to be hidden from view (possibly because of pencil marks).
- Mount your bats on a blank wall or near your fireplace to create a mural of bats swarming your house.
- Optional: Slightly fold up the wings of your bats for dimension.
3. Creepy Crawlers
For our next craft, we turn to the commonly feared, eight-legged house crawler. These arachnid creations can adorn any surface of your home, from your bookshelf to your entertainment center to your fireplace mantle.
You’ll Need:
- Sheets of felt (black and white)
- Cotton balls
- Sewing thread (black and white)
- Sewing needle
- Scissors
- Sheet of paper
- Pencil
Directions:
- Using your pencil, draw one mid-sized circle on a blank sheet of paper to create a stencil for the spider body. Next, outline eight spider legs: four on each side.
- Separately, draw one smaller circle to create a stencil for the eyeballs. After that, draw an even smaller circle to create a stencil for the pupils.
- Cut out these three stencils (i.e., one spider shape, one small circle, and an even smaller circle).
- Using your pencil, trace the spider stencil onto the black felt so you have two spider shapes. Repeat this step with the smallest stencil of circles so you have two pupil-sized circles.
- Using your pencil, trace the eyeball stencil onto the white felt so you have two small eyeball shapes.
- Using your scissors, cut out all these shapes.
- Using the white thread, sew the felt eyeballs onto one of the black spider shapes. Next, affix the pupils onto the eyeballs and use the black thread to sew them in place.
- Take your cotton balls and distress them to create a stuffing.
- Jam the cotton ball stuffing between your two spider shapes, making sure that the legs align on both sides.
- Using the black thread, sew both spider shapes together — and voilà! Repeat steps 1–10 until you achieve the desired number of creepy crawlers.
4. All Hail the Pumpkin King
Are you sick of the mess pumpkin carving leaves behind? Luckily, there’s another way to decorate gourds that is just as fun (if not more so)!
You’ll Need:
- Pumpkin(s)
- Acrylic paints
- Set of assorted paintbrushes
- Old newspapers
Directions:
- Wipe your pumpkin clean under running water or a non-disinfecting wet wipe.
- After the pumpkin is dry, use your paint and brush — and let your imagination run wild! Use newspapers to protect your furniture and flooring.
- After the paint is dry, place your pumpkin wherever you wish.
Some Ideas:
- Day of the Dead skulls
- Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas
- Horror movie slashers (Michael Myers or Jason Voorhies, etc.)
- Classic monsters (Frankenstein’s Monster or a mummy, etc.)
- Movie characters (from Monsters, Inc. or Minions, etc.)
- Cartoon characters (from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc.)
5. Hocus Po-tions
Take a page out of the Sanderson sisters’ spellbook and delve into some witchery with these easy-to-make potions that you can showcase on your mantelpiece or in a spooky vignette.
You’ll Need:
- Assorted glass bottles with corks or jars with lids
- Food coloring (various colors)
- Potion labels
- Small toy eyeballs and/or snakes (optional)
Directions:
- Pour varying levels of water into your glass bottles or jars.
- Add two to three drops of food coloring to each bottle or jar. Mix thoroughly. Make sure you have an eclectic assortment of colors.
- Add a potion label! You can purchase stickers or create your own with paper and a permanent marker.
- For more pizzazz, you can drop in small toy eyeballs or snakes in the tinted water to add visual intrigue.
